Soubès for walkers and hikers

Numerous short (and usually circular) walks lead out the village into the surrounding countryside. But for hardened hikers, many of the way-marked Grandes Randonnées walking routes that criss cross the whole of France converge at or near Soubès and nearby Lodève.

Not for the faint hearted, these walks vary in length from about 50km to over 100km, and take you through some of the most spectacular sights and landscapes in the area. Visit the Grandes Randonnées website for more detail and information on overnight accommodation along the routes.

The Way of St James (GR 653), one of the historic pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain starts to the east at Arles and passes through nearby

Lodève, taking in famous sites like the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert with its romanesque abbey set in the heart of the Hérault Gorges, which is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. A shorter randonnée, the GR74, takes you along ancient mule tracks to the Navacelles at the very heart of the ancient oxbow lake that forms the Cirque de Navacelles and through Saint Jean de Fos where locals execute death defying leaps from the Pont de Diable into the river below.

The GR71 also passes through both Lodève and Soubès to the ancient templar site of La Couvertoirade.
